Task #1: PLEASE STATE YOUR NAME THEN READ THE FOLLOWING SCRIPT:
During the question and answer portion of a recent radio conference, an aspiring broadcaster sheepishly stepped up to the microphone to ask the guest speaker the following question:
“Mr. Gilbert, what is the best piece of advice you can offer someone like myself who wants to be an on-air radio broadcaster?”
Without batting an eye, Gilbert responded “Find a mentor. This is a person who holds a job that you one day want to have. He can teach you the skills that you need to know, shorten your learning curve, introduce you to important industry contacts, and help you avoid the things that will prevent you from ever being hired.
Most importantly, a mentor will work with you one-on-one to identify your strengths and help you to overcome your weaknesses.
Since your mentor is already in the radio business, their contacts will indirectly become a part of your contacts. They can introduce you to people that you need to know and recommend you for jobs when they become available.
Finding a mentor is undoubtedly the quickest way to get your foot in the door of the radio or television broadcasting industry. Every successful person I have ever worked with, or hired, attributes much of their success to their mentor.”
After thanking the vice president of Cumulus broadcasting for his valuable insights, the aspiring radio broadcaster excitedly walked back to his seat, pondering how he too could find a mentor that will prepare him to achieve his dream of becoming a radio broadcaster.
